Introduction to the event

Through international collaboration, Professor Chi-Kang Tseng and his research team were invited by Professor Peter Baumann, Director of the Center for Healthy Aging at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and Professor/Dr. Susann Schweiger, Director of the Institute of Human Genetics at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, to conduct a one-month research exchange in Germany.

The University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is the only institution in Rhineland-Palatinate that provides the highest level of medical care and is internationally recognized as a leading hub for medical science. The center comprises more than 60 clinics, institutes, and departments, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration that integrates clinical practice with cutting-edge research.

Professors Peter Baumann and Susann Schweiger arranged a meeting for Professor Tseng’s team to engage in discussions with clinicians specializing in telomere biology disorder to explore how nucleic acid therapeutics developed in Taiwan could be advanced toward clinical trials. In particular, meetings were held with Professor/Dr. Michael Kreuter (Director of the Mainz Lung Center of the University Medical Center Mainz and the Marienhaus Clinic Mainz) and Professor/Dr. Daniel Sasca (Head of Personalized Hematology), focusing on the potential applications of nucleic acid therapeutics in treating Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Bone Marrow Failure (BMF). From their clinical perspectives, both physicians provided valuable insights and new ideas, while also expressing their willingness to establish future collaborations and offer clinical support—an experience from which the team greatly benefited.

The primary aim of this visit was to lay the foundation for future collaboration and to accelerate the translation of Professor Tseng’s nucleic acid therapeutics for telomere biology disorders into clinical applications.
