Introduction to the event

Professor Tu facilitated the collaboration between Professor Wood-hi Cheng and Assistant Professor Chun-Nien Liu of NCHU and Professor Shaya Fainman of UCSD.

Professor Shaya Fainman of UCSD. His research group has developed successfully two Silicon Photonic integrated circuits for 1D and 2D fast scanning for 3D image processing and analysis.  The collaboration between UCSD’s Silicon Photonic IC and NCHU’s ultrawide bandwidth fiber amplifier has resulted in a novel femtosecond ultrafast Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for rapid 2D scanning in a microscope.

Professor Tu and Assistant Professor Chun-Nien Liu combine this 2D scanning Optical Phased Array and 1550 nm wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) for the 4th-generation LiDAR and have successfully obtained in 2020 a MOST Startup project on 1550-nm eye-safe LiDAR for autonomous vehicles.

On December 14, 2020 the symposium was jointly sponsored by the ENABLE Center, Innovation and Development Center of Sustainable Agriculture, College of EECS.  Professor Tu has invited Professor Nicole Steinmetz of Nanoengineering Department and Professor Duygu Kuzum of ECE at UC San Diego.
